Enhancement: Add Linux support

Hi, I recently discovered Ember-P2P and I find the project very interesting, especially the choice to maintain compatibility with the eMule/KAD ecosystem while using a modern technology stack.

It would be great to have a Linux version of Ember alongside the versions already available for other operating systems.

In particular, it would be fantastic to have a .deb package and also an AppImage, making Ember easy to install and use across different Linux distributions.

Since Ember is developed in Rust and uses Tauri, I believe Linux support could be particularly interesting for users who currently use aMule and would welcome a modern eD2K/KAD client on Linux.

I would personally be very interested in trying Ember on Linux.

Hi, thanks for writing and for the kind words about Ember and the eMule/KAD compatibility.

A Linux build is something we want, and the stack makes it a natural fit. Ember is Rust + Tauri, and Tauri already produces .deb and AppImage, which is exactly the packaging you described. The protocol side (eD2K, KAD, Ember Network) is portable; a lot of the Linux/Unix filesystem and desktop plumbing is already in the code. Official releases are still Windows-only, so this is packaging, CI, and testing work rather than a rewrite.

.deb would be the straightforward install for Debian/Ubuntu/Mint. AppImage would be the “one file, many distros” option. Both are on the table.

I can’t promise a timeline yet, but interest from people coming from aMule is useful signal. If you have a distro you care most about, or a preference between .deb and AppImage first, that helps.

We are hoping to have this ready by the 1.6.0 release, which will also include our Channels feature in testing.
