Update from node.js 20 to 24 is required by GitHub by June 2nd, 2026 #1006

Description

@oddst

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Building Trio Dev with the Webbrowser building method (GitHub) will become a problem around June 2nd, 2026, if needed changes are not implemented. Similar issue report has been made in Zulipchat for Loop, and Marion Barker has already started work on this for LoopWorkspace.

Describe the solution you'd like

Necessary updates to Trio building files and referenced scripts needs to be put in place before GitHub stops building Trio around June 2nd, 2026.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Xcode/Mac building is not an alternative for those using Webbrowser building.

Additional context

Required updated to the building files regarding minimum macos runner macos-26 with Xcode 26.2/26.3 needs to be implemented already till April 28th...!

Technical Details

The following Annotations from GitHub are received when building Trio currently:

Node.js 20 actions are deprecated. The following actions are running on Node.js 20 and may not work as expected: actions/checkout@v4, aormsby/Fork-Sync-With-Upstream-action@v3.4.1. Actions will be forced to run with Node.js 24 by default starting June 2nd, 2026. Please check if updated versions of these actions are available that support Node.js 24. To opt into Node.js 24 now, set the FORCE_JAVASCRIPT_ACTIONS_TO_NODE24=true environment variable on the runner or in your workflow file. Once Node.js 24 becomes the default, you can temporarily opt out by setting ACTIONS_ALLOW_USE_UNSECURE_NODE_VERSION=true. For more information see:

This is received for the following actions:

User Impact

Trio Dev cannot be upgraded/built after June 2nd, 2026 - without these requirements taken care of.
