[Facebook] Issues with image extraction from posts (single/multi-image, groups/events)

Hi, I would like to report several issues related to downloading images from Facebook posts. I hope you’ll be able to address them, as there are clearly some inconsistencies in the current behavior.

Posts may contain either a single image or multiple images, and each case has its own different issues.

Use the following two links as examples:

1. Single-image posts

When a post contains only one image, instead of downloading that specific image, gallery-dl starts downloading many unrelated images. It appears to iterate through the entire photo collection (from newest to oldest) and continues indefinitely until manually interrupted.

2. Multi-image posts

When a post contains multiple images, it is treated as a set. However, only the first few images are downloaded, while the remaining ones are skipped entirely. This behavior is misleading, as it suggests that all images have been successfully downloaded.

When the extractor.facebook.loop=true option is enabled, the remaining images are eventually downloaded. However, the process repeatedly reports “Detected jump to the beginning of the set”. The same behavior occurs when downloading other types of sets (e.g., albums with /media/set in the URL).

3. Support for posts in groups and event pages

It would be very useful to support downloading images from posts in public groups and event pages. At first glance, these posts appear structurally similar to regular posts, so it may be possible to support them with only minimal adjustments. Hopefully, it's just a matter of wiring existing code to new path patterns.

In the case of groups, there are two interchangeable URL formats (permalink and posts). You can swap them either way, and these links still work.

Oh, I should have checked that list first. Is there any particular reason why posts are not supported? Is it simply a design decision, or are there any technical limitations involved?

https://www.facebook.com/MuzeumPlakatuwWilanowie/posts/1487355773175184 is internally handled as a set with ID a.627044269206343, which is technically an error.

If that's the case, then to avoid confusion, perhaps links to posts should explicitly indicate that they are not supported (similar to group and event URLs). Alternatively, is there any chance that support for them could be added in the future?

I've just realized that posts with a single image can be handled via direct photo links, since the post text is also available there and gets saved as the caption in the metadata file. This works as a workaround for me, so I can use those links for now.

Since I brought up the topic of descriptions, I have a few follow-up questions about sets, if you don’t mind.

1. Albums have both a title and a description, but currently only the title is saved in the metadata file. The same applies to sets from posts - their text content is not included. Would it be possible to add this information to the metadata?

2. I'm not sure whether the looping behavior is a bug or an intended result of technical limitations. In either case, would it be possible to include an additional field in the metadata file indicating the total number of images in the set? This would make it easier to verify whether all images were downloaded correctly. I know this number is available on album pages, but I'm not sure whether it is accessible for sets originating from posts.

I was experimenting a bit more and discovered a couple of additional issues with sets.

1. Incorrect images downloaded from some sets

Let's use this set as an example:

Why are so many unrelated images being downloaded? The set ID appears to be correct, but the extractor is pulling additional, unrelated photos.

2. Videos in sets are skipped without any information

Another issue is related to videos within sets. Take a look at this URL: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=pcb.3585919444883800

This set contains 4 photos and 1 video. Since extractor.facebook.videos is set to true by default, the video should also be downloaded. However, it is skipped entirely, without any warning or informational message.

Even when explicitly setting the option, the behavior remains the same:

Regarding the others: Facebook's internals are an absolute mess, and so is the gallery-dl code trying to handle and make sense of them... I'll see what I can do to "fix" at least some of it.

Yeah, I’ve seen what Facebook's DOM looks like, and indeed it's a mess. The worst part is that it seems to be designed that way on purpose, so it’s unlikely to improve in the future. That said, any improvements are greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to what you come up with 🙂

So my below diff/patch works but I don't why like we don't support video, reel in set ? like we can get video_id by changing _typename to "Video" and my patch/diff will work for all above urls without going in loop and I am 99.9% sure that the loop generator is here

because nextMedia means the next post/reel in feed it is not nextMedia of Multi-post, etc and after removing this the loop will end perfectly and if we remove the jump detection then also it works but it's ok and I found this url that has 40 posts/photos https://www.facebook.com/joho.press.jp/posts/pfbid02mfFRpVkErLQxQ8cpD2f1hwXEVsFzK8kfNBKdK2Jndnx6AkmMQZuXhovwDgwvoDNil and my patch download that also correctly without going in loop.
