The large instantaneous pop-up makes it extremely difficult to navigate the tree. As soon as a person's icon is hovered or clicked an enormous pop-up covers a significant area obstructing the content under it.
When viewing a dense tree, or on a smaller screens like 13-14" the pop-up is almost always present since it's very easy to move the cursor over a person.
Describe the solution you'd like
There should be a way to close the pop-up explicitly: press Escape or click on "X" button. WCAG requires that hover popups to be dismissible so they don't accidentally block the main content: https://www.wcag.com/authors/1-4-13-content-on-hover-or-focus/ . This is the exact case here.
Another solution would be to make the overlay optional. Similar to wikipedia's page previews:
