@michaelnmmeyer — could you take a brief look at the discussion between me and Axelle at 5.5.2 in DHARMA Encoding Guide Critical Editions NEW, and make the necessary changes to the schema and XLST for <seg rend="highlight">...</seg> so that the files containing this do not get flagged as erroneous and bold face is implemented in display?

I assume all of this is easy and that it will take you no more than 15 minutes. If it is more complicated than that, let me know.

Why do you want to use <seg rend="highlight"> instead of <seg type="highlight">? Having both @rend and @type allow the same value seems confusing to me. And I would also expect @rend='highlight' to actually highlight the text (like @rend='check' does).
