What do workspaces mean for locally stored collections that had no workspace to start with

I have a number of collections that are all stored in a single shared repo. That works great for my team. To my mind, Collections is the top-level organizing principle, and below that level I have folders and a variety of environments if needed. It's the right kind of abstraction. Now I noticed that workspaces were added in v3, and existing collections have defaulted to 'My Workspace'. What does that mean for my locally stored collections? I haven't dared committing anything since v3. I see the collections in the same local folder as before. At one point I can see myself organizing my collections into two general workspaces: "src", for which we have a remote repo, and a "local_only" workspace. Would me moving existing collections into new workspace change the file path entirely, or otherwise mean the file has to be committed because of changes? What would you recommend?
