Non-ASCII strings

Does BN support non-ASCII strings, i.e. EBCDIC? Can I freely define custom character sets, e.g. CCITT-2 or others?

He's not saying "here is a plugin that does it", he's saying "someone would need to write a plugin using the APIs we have added recently". See more information in our 5.2 release blog post.

Ok, my fault. My interpretation of "Yes, though a plugin is required" was "We have that now, but you need to install a plugin, look there".
Anyhow, it's a pity that this fundamental thing is not part of BN, yet.
