About the course

Two days (16 hours) of hands-on graph database work. You install and configure Neo4j, learn Cypher from first principles, import real CSV data, design and refactor a graph data model, build a Python application on the official driver, and administer users, performance and backups.

Course code TGS-2023036640
Duration 2 days · 16 hours (9:30am – 6:30pm)
Level Beginner — no graph database experience required
Skills Framework Database Administration (ICT-OUS-3006-1.1)
Assessment Written Assessment (SAQ) + Practical Performance, both open book
Funding SkillsFuture Credit, SFEC, UTAP and PSEA eligible

Learning outcomes

  1. LO1 — Perform installation, configuration and maintaining of Neo4j databases
  2. LO2 — Troubleshoot database errors and user access issues on Neo4j databases
  3. LO3 — Analyse performance statistics and implement regular data backup on Neo4j databases

The labs

Seventeen labs across six topics. Work through them in order — each builds on the state left by the previous one.

Topic Labs
1 · Neo4j Fundamentals 1 Explore a graph database · 2 Install Desktop & AuraDB · 3 Load a dataset & Browser
2 · Cypher Fundamentals 4 MATCH, WHERE, RETURN · 5 MERGE, CREATE, SET · 6 Troubleshoot errors
3 · Intermediate Cypher 7 Filter, order, shape · 8 Aggregate & pipeline · 9 EXPLAIN & PROFILE
4 · Importing CSV Data 10 Data Importer · 11 LOAD CSV & constraints
5 · Graph Data Modeling 12 Model from use cases · 13 Refactor for performance · 14 Intermediate nodes & POLE
6 · Applications with Python 15 Connect with the driver · 16 Process driver results · 17 Users, monitoring, backup

Each lab is a self-contained folder — instructions in README.md, every Cypher statement in solution.cypher, plus the mock data, Python programme and shell commands that lab needs. Full step-by-step narrative is in the Learner Guide; the slides deliberately carry the concepts and the lab briefing, not the click-by-click procedure.

Before you start

You need:

  • A Windows or macOS laptop with 8 GB RAM and rights to install software
  • Neo4j Desktop — the local development environment
  • A free Neo4j account, which unlocks Sandbox and AuraDB Free
  • Python 3.9+ with pip, for the driver labs in Topic 6
  • A modern browser for Neo4j Browser and the Data Importer
# Topic 6 setup
python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate
pip install neo4j python-dotenv

Verify your install in Neo4j Browser:

RETURN 'Neo4j is running' AS status, datetime() AS checkedAt;
CALL dbms.components() YIELD name, versions, edition
RETURN name, versions, edition;

Conventions used in the labs

  • Cypher keywords in UPPER CASE, labels in PascalCase, relationship types in UPPER_SNAKE_CASE, property keys in camelCase
  • Run a query in Neo4j Browser with Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on macOS)
  • Lines starting with // are comments and are not executed
  • Where a step says a query should fail, run it anyway and read the error — diagnosing these is assessed under LO2
  • Several labs begin with MATCH (n) DETACH DELETE n. Only ever run that against a course database
